  59. Some of us have the good fortune to live in places that have an
  60. adequate supply of record stores, well informed collectors with the 
  61. latest gab on your favorite artists, and record shows; if you aren't
  62. in such a location, you may feel out of touch.  Don't fret!  Even the 
  63. most avid record hounds use mail-order as a reliable way to purchase 
  64. books, posters, and memorabilia (not to mention information regarding
  65. new records, tours, etc...)

  96. The number of publications about Bob Dylan continues to grow rapidly:
  97. Here is a three-part overview of some of the better-known books,
  98. divided by subject material.  This is only the tip of the iceberg -
  99. better to check a catalog or your local libraries and bookstores for
  100. greater detail.

  102. If you read the following list and think you might want to read many of
  103. these books but could never afford them, do not despair!  Inform your 
  104. local library of the vast, untapped multitude of popular music resources 
  105. by recommending some of these titles to them.  Do not be afraid; most 
  106. librarians do not bite.  After all, what good is a public library that 
  107. does not take suggestions from its public?  These books are, for the most 
  108. part, well-written commentary on the life and music of one of the most 
  109. significant popular songwriters of this century, and are a worthy addition 
  110. to a library collection...

  130.  
  131. Bob Dylan has never been accused of over-publicizing his private life.
  132. Consequently, you will find that most of the biographies concerning
  133. him are rather spotty for large periods of time, and often contradict
  134. one another on important details.  Most of the older biographies focus
  135. heavily on the years up to 1966, and are pretty thin from there onward.

  349. that provides information on new CDs, re-issued CDs, underground CDs,
  350. and planned releases, all from reliable sources.  Again, not a Dylan
  351. magazine, but usually contains something regarding Dylan CDs...

  355. This is a record and CD collectors' publication, published
  356. twice a month, known for being a forum for bootleg buyers and
  357. sellers.  Goldmine has phased out detailed advertisements from all 
  358. but the largest dealers, including a crackdown on classified ads.  
  359. This includes tapes and videos, but *not* CD's.  Subscriptions are $35 
  360. for a year; you can call and order by Visa/MC, or mail them a check or 
  361. money order.  If you call them they will send you a free sample copy.

  363. On The Tracks: The Unauthorized Bob Dylan Magazine (US - published
  364. by Rolling Tomes [address above], quarterly, US subscriptions currently
  365. $24.95/yr, or $39.95/yr to also receive the monthly newsletter, 
  366. Series of Dreams)  Features interviews, columns by well-known Dylan
  367. commentators, such as Paul Williams, and importantly, includes the 
  368. Rolling Tomes catalog within its pages.  The companion newsletter 
  369. covers the gritty details such as concert dates, setlists, news events 
  370. and rumors.

  378. payable to Phill Townsend) TFEQ is a news-sheet produced by Phill Townsend 
  379. (Crazy Joe in ISIS) that gives updates on Dylan CD boots as they become 
  380. available. This information later becomes available in ISIS and Series of 
  381. Dreams, and eventually in Townsend's book(s).

  397. 12. I just read an article about Bob Dylan in my newspaper...
  398.  
  399. Mark Carter provides a cutting service to which everyone should 
  400. contribute.  If you  see something in a newspaper, magazine or 
  401. journal of even the remotest relevance to Bob Dylan and his work 
  402. then you should send it to him.  If it is something you would throw  
  403. away then send the original, otherwise send a photocopy.  Include all 
  404. relevant information of the date, publication, place, page numbers, etc.

  414. Just because the article appeared in the New York Times doesn't
  415. mean that someone else has already sent it!  Duplications are trivial,
  416. but omissions are glaring errors :-).  Submissions from publications
  417. with limited circulation and non-English newspapers are especially
  418. encouraged, since the rest of the world will probably never know of
  419. these articles unless you clip them!
  420.  
  421. 13. What are bootlegs, and how do I find them?
  422.  
  423. A bootleg is any recording, live or studio, which is not officially
  424. sanctioned by the artist's recording company for sale or distribution.
  425. In the U.S., it is legal to tape a radio show or television special 
  426. for your own personal use, but it is illegal to sell or rebroadcast
  427. such a recording.  It is also illegal to record concerts without the 
  428. artist's consent, and anyone who makes or distributes bootleg 
  429. recordings can be subject to prosecution.
  430.  
  431. A pirated recording, however, is an illegal copy of an official 
  432. release by an artist.  Anyone who tapes a legally available CD or 
  433. record and then tries to sell you a copy is violating the copyright
  434. on that recording and is knowingly depriving the artist of royalties. 
  435. The record industry does its best to search out pirates and prosecute
  436. them.  Pirated recordings (often made in countries like Thailand
  437. or Indonesia, where authorities are easy to bribe or too busy to
  438. notice) do deprive the company and artist of money, and are thus
  439. far worse than bootlegs - the record industry claims that it loses
  440. hundreds of millions of dollars every year to record pirates.  These
  441. are usually the cheapo tapes with blurry covers (or no jacket at all)
  442. that are sold in flea markets and the like.  Avoid like the plague.
  443.  
  444. On the other hand, counterfeit recordings are generally very 
  445. professional in appearance (supposedly there are thousands of pirated 
  446. copies of the Beatles' _Let It Be_ album in circulation that are nearly 
  447. indistinguishable from the official Apple Records release).  
  448. A counterfeit recording is an exact copy of a legitimate recording
  449. (often with a few distinguishing flaws) that is illegally distributed as
  450. the real thing.

  452. Nevertheless, there are literally thousands of bootleg recordings of
  453. Dylan performances and even studio sessions that are widely circulated
  454. among collectors, and certain countries (such as Italy) have lenient
  455. copyright laws which allow many of these recordings to be pressed on
  456. compact disc.  These discs are usually distributed as expensive
  457. "live/rare" material and can only be found through record specialty 
  458. stores (usually the same places that sell used records) and individual 
  459. dealers, some of whom do mailorder business.
  460.  
  461. It is not within proper Internet/Usenet etiquette to make the sources
  462. of such black-market operations available publicly, so the only way
  463. that you will find bootlegs is by finding a store that sells them or
  464. posting a request for information and waiting for someone to respond
  465. via email.  That is one FAQ that can't be answered publicly.

  467. Many people obtain 'live/rare' material by trading DAT or cassette tapes.
  468. This is obviously a lot cheaper than searching for profit-seeking dealers
  469. of CD bootlegs (most of these are mastered from cassettes, anyway),
  470. and is far less condemnable, so long as there is no payment involved.
  471. Rec.music.gdead, the newsgroup for the Grateful Dead, is one place
  472. where live tapes are traded legally - this is because the Grateful Dead
  473. allow their concerts to be taped from a special section of the audience
  474. and distributed for non-profit listening.  If you follow the newsgroup
  475. for a while, you will invariably see discussions of unreleased Bob Dylan
  476. material.  A friendly email response will often help locate someone with 
  477. whom you can trade live Dylan tapes...
  478.  
  479. If you do come across a Dylan CD and want to tell the newsgroup about 
  480. it, simply imitate the format of other listings you have seen, or ask 
  481. for help.  Of importance are the songs included and their length, the 
  482. title and manufacturer of the disc, the matrix number (printed in tiny 
  483. characters on the inner ring of the disc), and the supposed origin of 
  484. the recording.

  487. 14. Where can I get a copy of...?
  488.  
  489. There are certain Bob Dylan items that are frequently referred to by
  490. writers, critics and fans, but are simply not available to the general
  491. public except as bootlegs [see item 13...].  Here are a few such items:

  493. The movie Renaldo and Clara - this four-hour movie (and a two-hour,
  494. edited version) was shown at a few theaters in 1978, received generally
  495. dismal reviews, and disappeared from sight.  It will probably not be
  496. given official release on any format any time in the near future.
  497. It does, however, contain some great live footage from the 1975
  498. Rolling Thunder tour, during which this movie was recorded.  Circulating
  499. videotape copies probably originated from a mid-1980's late-night
  500. television broadcast of this movie in Britain.
  501.  
  502. The Hard Rain television special - filmed in concert in Fort Collins,
  503. Colorado, May 1976, this footage was broadcast on NBC, but has not seen
  504. official release on videocassette.  Some, but not all, of the performances 
  505. from this set are on the live album _Hard Rain_...  There is an 'alternate' 
  506. version of the Hard Rain special, with a very different song selection, 
  507. from Clearwater, Florida, April 1976 that was never released but also 
  508. circulates in the underground.

  510. The movie Eat the Document - a one-hour film shot by D.A. Pennebaker
  511. during the landmark 1966 'electric' tour of England.  Again, this film
  512. was shown at a few theaters in 1971, and has had a rare television 
  513. airing or two since, but is not in print.  A short tape of outtakes
  514. from the movie was assembled by Pennebaker and circulates on videotape.
  515.  
  516. The Royal Albert Hall concert - one of the most famous bootlegs of all 
  517. time, also from the 1966 tour of England (many believe that this
  518. recording is really from Manchester or elsewhere).  Contains some
  519. truly amazing live performances; the 'electric' set was received very
  520. poorly by the audience at hand.  Near the end of the show, an
  521. irritated audience member yells out "Judas!"  Dylan responds by saying:
  522. "I don't believe you... You're a liar!" before launching into a truly
  523. overpowering version of "Like a Rolling Stone," obviously directed at
  524. that same audience member...  This audio bootleg is one of many fragments
  525. of of soundboard tapes circulating from the 1966 tour, and the origin
  526. of these tapes is a frequent topic of discussion among Dylan fans
  527. everywhere.

  529. Please note that the D.A. Pennebaker film of the 1965 British tour *is*
  530. in print on videocassette; it's called "Don't Look Back."  Also in print
  531. on videocassette is an in concert videotape of Dylan with Tom Petty &
  532. the Heartbreakers from 1986, titled "Hard to Handle."  There is also
  533. a movie titled "Festival" which covers several of the Newport Folk
  534. Festivals during the 1960's, including Dylan's infamous 1965 appearance
  535. with the Butterfield Blues Band.

  537. In short, the easiest way to find a particular out-of-print or rare item
  538. is to latch onto a discussion of that item, or to bring up the topic
  539. yourself.  Most Bob Dylan fans are quite willing to share their addiction 
  540. with others...
